2014 Oscars Best Dressed

The 86th Annual Oscars were last night. I wasn't planning on watching (I care less and less about who wins because I never agree, and I can just look at the pretty things on the internet the next day), but I couldn't get comfortable so I ended up catching most of it. Ellen DeGeneres hosted and was typically affable. She tried to get all of the movie stars to eat pizza, which was great. The only one I actually saw eat something was Jennifer Lawrence, which is why I love her.

On the red carpet, ladies continued the year-long obsession with nude, cream and white. Quite frankly, it's getting boring. If it was up to me, I'd ban side-swept soft curls, column silhouettes and cream altogether. I suppose that the Academy Awards demand a bit more tradition than the Emmy's, but I got so excited about the shift in fashion. Hopefully the next awards show will have a few more bold choices.

What I liked were well-put together looks that married classic cuts with polished hair and makeup. Here are my top picks for the night:

Cate Blanchett is nothing if not dependable. Hers was probably the most classically Old Hollywood of all of the ensembles that I chose, but I don't begrudge her it. She's been working a more classic look this awards season, but given the fact that she's traditionally a risk-taker who pulls over avant garde looks with ease, I'll let her be. Her nude, embroidered Giorgio Armani gown topped off with a blonde wavy bob was giving major Grace Kelley. If the dress had been strapless--as I think most designers would have done--it would have bored me, but the invisible skaters neckline added another level of drama to this sweet look.

Drama and glamour were on hand with Charlize Theron's bold black Dior gown. The deep plunge of the neckline looks to flay up into spiked cups, but there are actually nude straps on the dress, which makes the whole look less severe. Helping to soften things are the sheer inlays in the skirt, and the nude, romantic makeup.

I LOVE this dress. When Jennifer Garner walked onstage to present an award, her fringe tassels swayed back and forth in perfect motion. I usually don't like a platform lift on a heel, but I think it modernizes the very Downton Abbey look of her Oscar de la Renta shift, without taking away from the fun factor of the whole look. Also, is anyone prettier than Jennifer Garner? I think not.

If I had to make a list of most fashionable celeb, Kelly Osbourne probably wouldn't even spring to mind. But the sleek line of this white Badgley Mischka column gown topped with an embroidered and embellished capelet is pretty much perfection. I immediately thought of Jennifer Lopez's Zuhair Murad gown at the 2011 Golden Globes, but this number is so much classier. The white plays off of her purple hair perfectly, and the while look manages to do the impossible: slimming a woman in white.

I want to give Kerry Washington an award for even attempting those heels at this point in her pregnancy. Once your bump gets this big, it's hard to find anything remotely flattering. Anything that shows off the bump also shows off your expanding behind, expanding thighs, expanding hips, and, well, you get the picture. This purple Jason Wu gown utilizes draping perfectly to highlight her burgeoning bump and hide other areas she might not want to show Romantic curls and blood red lips and nails complete the look.

Lupita Nyong'o has nailed it this awards season. Every look as been head-to-toe perfection, and last night was no exception. The Oscar-winner has been donning lots of column and shift dresses, so this sky blue Prada gown was a welcome change. The belt placed at her natural waist separates a DEEP plunging neckline (more sweet than sexy given her chest size) and flowing layers of chiffon. The look was topped off with a cute headband, which further served to soften the overall ensemble.

Sarah Paulson is quickly becoming on of my fashion favorites. On most other people this long-sleeved, column Elie Saab would have been overwhelming, especially in my beloved cream. But on Sarah, whose sleek bob modern bob and brown smoky eyes update the look, even the overall embellishment doesn't weigh her down. All hail the new Supreme.

And my favorite overall look of the night goes to Kate Hudson. It's white and satin, which is ballsy as hell, but the gathered rouching at the waist, which continues up into the deep-V bust makes it more figure flattering and more visually interesting. The gown alone would have been Halston realness,  but the addition of a cape (with shoulder pads!) made this Versace number over-the-top '70s sexy. Kate's smoky eye and simple hair serve to let the gown shine.

On the Hunt: Diaper Bags

As the due date fast approaches, there are a million little things we need to get ready before baby comes. Most of the large furniture is already in her nursery, we've picked out a stroller, car seat and pump, and now we're just waiting until after the shower to fill in the blanks. One thing that I haven't decided on is a diaper bag. It's something that, as soon as we start leaving the house for daily walks, park trips and appointments, I'll be using everyday. Like, everyday for the next few years, so it's kind of an important decision. I'd like to find a happy medium between not busting the bank and not looking like I'm carrying around an ugly old diaper bag. Here are some contenders:

1. Nordstrom, $70
3. Nordstrom, $80
4. Carter's, $49
5. Kate Spade, $149
6. JJ Cole, $70
7. Evie Bett, PUR
8. Nordstrom, $85
9. Evie Bett, PUR
10. Stork Sak, $132
11. Lily Jade, $260
12. Nordstrom, $64

Which are your favorites? What should I be prioritizing when looking for a diaper bag?

7 Things That Got Me Through This Week

I know I've been awful about posting. The pregnancy had me busy and then Charlie got very, very sick, but my hope is that I can post more regularly now! Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

Shop the Trend: Faux Fur Vests

The temperatures finally dipped below 70 for the entire day today--perfect weather for layering! I love a big wool sweater or a button-up cardigan, but sometimes you want to look a little more glammed up. An easy way to achieve a glam look on a small budget--and stay warm this fall--is by wearing a faux fur vest.

2. American Eagle, $67
3. BB Dakota at ModCloth, $84
4. H&M, $60
5. H&M, $40

How to Wear it: Harem Pants

About a month ago I bought a pair of black harem pants. As a curvy girl, sometimes it's hard to find pants that fit every part of my body. And as someone who likes to eat second dinner, I need a little growing room. So this pair of pants (which, by the way, are made of sweat pant material), is perfect for me. But how do you wear them without looking like a homeless genie? Find out below!

Shop the Trend: Over-the-Knee Boots

Fall is officially here and I'm hoping for more than a weeklong cool streak before a blizzard hits NYC. With the change in weather, I'm finally getting to bust out my layers--collars and sweaters and jackets and hats, oh my! And boots! I invested in a couple booties this year and have a few calf-length boots from years past, but I am absolutely obsessed with the over-the-knee boots taking over this season. Here are a few budget-friendly options I'm loving.

2013 Emmy's Best Dressed

Last night was one of my favorite nights of the year... the Emmy's! Those who know me know that I watch more television than anyone you'll ever meet, so this is basically my Super Bowl/Halloween/Christmas all rolled into one. And as much as I tune in to see my favorite shows rewarded (and snubbed), I'm also there for the fashion.

This year women seemed to move away from the nods to Old Hollywood glamour that have filled red carpets for the past few awards seasons and took the 90s explosion right into gowns. Feminine pinks and reds worked right alongside this years black and white trend, and many of the gowns would have looked just as at home resting on the macrobiotic-fed, Yoga-toned bods of 90s It-Girls like Gwyneth Paltrow, Winona Ryder and Lara Flynn Boyle.

I'm excited about this shift in red carpet glam. I love a good Hayworth wave, but new silhouettes and bold patterns (not to mention more than a few adorable bobs) make watching the pre-show so much more fun! Without further ado, here are my top 10 dresses for the night.

Christina Hendricks looked drop-dead gorgeous in a custom made Christian Siriano gown. The designer has become her go-to red carpet glam solution, and it's no surprise she keeps going back. The Mad Men actress said that the Project Runway winner constructs his gowns so well that she does even need to wear a bra--as a lady with an ample chest, I can tell you that is a feat. Christina's flirty curls make me want to chop all of my hair off and never look back.

I'm seeing big things in House of Cards' Kristen Connolly. I absolutely loved her in Cabin in the Woods (the best horror movie to come out in the last 10 years), and she shut it down at the Emmy's. Her Nicholas Oakwell long-sleeved gown sported a deco-inspired pattern and a slight bell sleeve. The sheer quality of the fabric helped to make this completely-covered-up look sexy and young.

This was the first pink look on the carpet that I feel in love with. This column gown suits Colbie Smoulders' body perfectly. Her athletic build and small bust look amazing in this J. Mendel gown. Could I do without her mom hair? Yes. Is her monastic makeup perfect for his feminine look? Yes. We'll call that about even.

True story: Jane Fonda wore this Escada gown over a series of episodes of Newsroom and my husband got annoyed with the amount of times I said, "That is an amazing dress." Then I saw HBIC Jessica Lange pop up with it on the Emmy's red carpet and fell in love all over again. The feather detailing and subtle sparkle are perfectly offset by the black circle skirt. Jessica proves that looking fab has no age limit.

Elizabeth Moss is rocking two of the season's huge trends: color blocking and black and white. This Andrew Gn might have been boring if not for the all-over beading on both the top and bottom. Elizabeth's bold red lip (and matching nails, natch), as well as her hip blonde cut help to steer the look away from boring and old.

A few awards seasons ago it seemed like every actress was donning Armani Prive. This year only one did--but she did it beautifully. Claire Danes' look was suited perfectly for her slight frame: the 20s drop waist, extremely deep V-nick, spaghetti straps and delicate lace all work on her, as does her tucked-under faux bob. Have I mentioned that I want to cut all of my hair off?

Michelle Dockery has quickly emerged as one-to-watch on the red carpet. She always takes a risk and (much like her character on Downton Abbey) always knows exactly what to wear to compliment her figure. Another color block look, this grand-skirt-and-halter-top Prada boasts a surprising color combo (why not, it's fall?!) and a peekaboo show cut in front. See also: Pllleeeeassseee let me cut my hair!

Kate Mara's J. Mendel dress might be my favorite of the night. I love a risk taker on the red carpet, and this family always takes a risk. But here sis Rooney would probably have chosen the gown in black and swathed her eyes in charcoal liner, Kate chose to go bright white, right down to her tips and toes, and lighted the look overall. Her shoes (with their see-through plastic strap) are right on trend and the basket weave on her sheer pop might just be the new Stella McCartney polka dot.

Let's talk about Orange is the New Black's Taylor Schilling. Her Netflix show is so buzzy that it's not even eligible for nomination this year but she already wore a custom-made Thakoon gown. The halter top (and spaghetti straps) are back for better or for worse... but when you look like this, it's definitely better. Perfectly cut, especially in that slit up the front of the dress, this gown marks the beginning of a lot of good things for Taylor.

Rose Byrne is serving 90s realness in this Calvin Klein Collection two-piece ensemble. The dewey pink was the color of the night on the carpet and complemented her new blonde 'do perfectly. Another halter top, another circle skirt, another romantic pink face. Ladies, this might have been the best put-together ensemble of the night.

Style Award: Solange Knowles

This installment of Style Awards is honoring the lovely Solange Knowles. While she began her career as the younger (and often copycat) sister of diva Beyonce, she's spent the past decade or so blazing a trail of her own. Her music is more hipster than it is "Hero" and her style has followed suit. She resides in Brooklyn with her son and her style reflects the eclectic and fashion-forward nature of the borough. Solange incorporates menswear looks, rock-and-roll edge and tribal patterns, all while showing girls that natural hair is just as fab as bleach blonde lace fronts. Solange, you're the only reason I'd take the L east--let's hang out and go shopping!

Here's how I could get her look for myself--at a budget that's more Cooper and less Knowles!

Casual Cool

Outfit: Sweatshirt: Forever21/ Jeans: Levi's/ Booties: Breckelle's/ Necklace: H&M/ Bracelet: Private Artisan in Lincoln, Nebraska

I spent the day doing deep cleaning in my apartment, blogging, and doing various home improvement projects around the house. And while I needed to be comfy for all of that, I didn't need to look frumpy. This outfit was the perfect combination--just as stretchable as it is cute. The zipper detail on this sweatshirt brings it just a bit of edge and adding some metallic jewelry (a geode necklace and handmade bracelet) keep the look from being too gym-rat. And what's the easiest solution to glamming up any outfit? Throw on a thick black liner and a subtle smokey eye.

My Week on Instagram

Most of my week has been consumed with projects pertaining to my bedroom remodel. So that explains the spotty blog posts--but it also means there will be an in-progress bedroom reveal coming soon! When we got back from our weddingpalooza there were boxes and boxes of things I had ordered for the bedroom, and that took a few days in and of itself to sort through. When I had them organized I marched my butt down to the hardware store and ordered up some black paint for the accent wall. I am SO happy with how it looks with all of the white furniture.

I had a bunch of pics I hand't showed off from our vacay, so I threw those up and shared them with the world. I rented the runway once again and wore a Haute Hippie dress to Erin and Marc's wedding. Grant loved it on me, and especially liked the soft curls I had in my hair. I like the way it showed off my ginormous boobies. Let's be real ladies, the ONLY good part about gaining weight is getting Pam Anderson-sized honkers, and mine are about as big as my head at this point. I'm working on getting them (and the rest of me) smaller, but I sure will miss 'em.

Boo always manages to look dapper in a suit, as do the rest of those Rogers boys. They're all so tall and visually impaired. Gives me hope for that offensive line I'm hoping to raise one day.

Jonathan and I hit up Therapy last week. I love a good disco ball and the DJ is good before it gets too late. Plus, they have food during the week and you know I like a bar where they'll deliver food to me. Speaking of food, Grant and I celebrated our courthouse anniversary yesterday. We were married by a classically Brooklyn-ite man in a mustache, and it was amazing. He got insurance for the year. I got a great meal at Arriba Arriba in Morningside Heights a year later. Win-win.

Later on in the week my shipment of IKEA furniture came and I got to start on my epic vanity build. I painted and stained and installed hardware and installed the table and then Homer saw himself in the mirror and just stared and stared. See those lucite makeup organizers? They. Are. Everything.

Pumpkin spice things are back. Everything is happening in my life.

Best of MBFW S/S 2014

Here is NYC we just wrapped up another Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. It's always a fun time in the city, especially if you have a chance to check out what the city's chic and stylist wear to see and be seen. If you don't live here or you don't work in fashion, you might know that the week is packed with events. There are the shows at the tents (the official MBFW shows), then there are hundreds of off-site shows. Most of these also have after parties, as well as book signings, blogger events, website popups, magazine fetes, and the list goes on and on.

This year I had the opportunity to attend the launch of OK! TV, held at Lavo. I used to work at the magazine and there were tons of reality stars there, so the whole thing was amazing. And while I didn't actually attend any shows, I followed them all online... and loved so much of what I saw.

Below you'll find three of my favorite looks from my Top 10 S/S 2014 Collections... and a few extra from Jenny Packham because, I mean, come on.
